Although you might not believe it, this scenic village is actually part of Amsterdam although you’ll feel a world’s away when you visit. This tiny village of about 300 residents will give you a nice taste of the Dutch countryside without leaving Amsterdam proper over a scenic bike ride that should take up part of an afternoon. Why visit Ransdorp?
People often assume that in order to see the polders, the sheep, and the cute Dutch towns, you need to leave Amsterdam. Due to Amsterdam’s expansion in the last century, Ransdorp is technically part of Amsterdam just thirty minutes by bike. This scenic bike ride is gorgeous, perfect for a break from the crowds of Amsterdam, as you explore the picturesque countryside of Amsterdam.
The village itself is protected and quite a few of the buildings are Rijksmonument (historic buildings). Even if you don’t have the time to leave Amsterdam to visit some of the smaller cute towns surrounding Amsterdam, Ransdorp should give you a nice taste of Holland beyond Amsterdam.
Getting to Ransdorp
The most scenic way to get to Ransdorp is by ferry and bike, which will take you past Nieuwendam, another picturesque village within Amsterdam. The cycle is about 35 minutes at a higher speed and about an hour if you’re going slowly. The ride is pretty easy although the bridges (if you go back through Amsterdam Oost) can be a bit challenging if you’re not used to cycling.

The history of Ransdorp
Ransdorp is a village that has existed for a long time, prior to the 80 years war. It was destroyed by the Spanish as well as the Geuzen in the 80 years war. This town was historically a prosperous town with a Catholic minority although this changed in the medieval ages.
The town was rebuilt after the war although its Gothic church has remained. Dairy farming has been a part of the economy of the town and in summer, you should be able to see cows

The most famous building in Ransdorp is the Gothic tower that is its iconic symbol. The tower dates back to 1502 and although plans were made to continue building, the money ran out. The church here dates back to 1324, however the original church burned down after getting hit by lightning.

You can enter for 50 cents from April to September on Saturdays and Sundays. During July and August, the tower is open daily besides Mondays in the afternoons. You can also arrange a visit on your own by calling the church.
