I LOVE a unique hotel. When I was visiting Moscow last winter, I happened upon Hotel Sovietsky. This historical hotel in Moscow is one of the most interesting hotels that I’ve stayed in. Keep reading for photos because who doesn’t love a gorgeous retro hotel?
Legendary Hotel Sovietsky (Советский)
Slightly outside of Moscow’s center, you’ll find an interesting hotel. This hotel is a reasonably priced 4* hotel with an enigma: a historic restaurant decorated with lavish gold accents and Communist symbols.
The Yar Restaurant was founded in 1826. It was a restaurant and theatre that was attended by the likes of Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Pushkin. During the Soviet era (there are a lot of urban legends about this), the restaurant was mysteriously relocated to the Sovietsky hotel. You can still have dinner here by making a reservation through the hotel although it’s best to bring a nice pair of clothes with you if you wish to have dinner at the Yar, which is still an upscale restaurant according to my Russian friend (and his family).
Accidental Wes Anderson?
Legendary Hotel Sovietsky itself dates back to 1951 where it was used for Communist party meetings. It has a distinctly Wes Anderson retro vibe that comes from the paintings of Lenin (and other famous Communists on the wall) combined with crystal chandeliers, and a distinctly retro touches that will take you back to the cold war era. I was absolutely puzzled by the contrast of the Sovietsky’s lavish interior with its Communist touches.
We paid 55 euros for our night at the Legendary Hotel Sovietsky, which included a delicious breakfast buffet included in the price. Our room, which was clean and spacious, was comfortable with a nice bath.
The bed was very comfortable and I was really impressed with the customer service. (One of the employees gave us a lift to the train station after noticing us struggling with our bags.)
